The date for the Kentucky Derby 2012 horse race is quickly approaching, and is set to occur at 6:24 pm, Eastern Standard Time on Saturday, May 5th, on NBC, as part of their NBC Sports lineup. The Kentucky Derby will also be seen on NBC’s free live streaming online video feed, starting at 4PM in the evening.  This famous race always takes place on the first Saturday in May, and is the main event of the two week long Kentucky Derby Festival.  It’s also the first part of the Triple Crown of thoroughbred horseracing which also includes Belmont Stakes and Preakness. There are always some real interesting stories that surround the derby and its horses, and this year is certainly no exception!

The 2012 Kentucky Derby will be televised on NBC, with its affiliate stations around the country showing the event.  Coverage begins at 4PM EST, with the race itself scheduled for a post time of 6:24PM EST.  In addition, the NBC Sports website has listed on its schedule that this race will be shown live streaming online.  The race was shown in the same fashion last year with multiple camera angles for viewers to see all of the action in different ways around the track.

One of the most heartwarming and riveting stories in this year’s derby revolves around Trinniberg, a Teuflesberg colt that was purchased completely on accident for only $21,000. The Parboo family, who owns the horse, got that strange name because when they initially immigrated, the name was misspelled, and the patriarch of the family simply did not want to go to the effort of getting it changed. There has been quite a few questions whether or not Trinniberg can actually manage the length of the Kentucky Derby, since he has never raced a track that long. The horse’s owners, however, remain hopeful that they can win.

This years Derby only has room for two favorites though, and both are from returning champions. Michael Matz, who hasn’t won a Derby since he raced Barbaro in 2006, is looking for another win, and so is Bob Baffert, who hasn’t won since 2002, after which his career was halted by a heart attack. Matz is bringing a very good horse, “Union Rags’, who has not finished in any position less than third. Baffert’s top horse, while missing such a prestigious winning record, is named Bodemeister, after his 7 year old kid Bode.

This years Derby seems like it won’t disappoint, and it should definitely be worth tuning in on May 5th for the conclusion.  So set those DVR’s and TIVO’s, or make sure your internet is connected on Saturday for the 2012 Kentucky Derby race starting at 4PM!
